5 of the biggest crafting trends for 2023

Now that we’re over halfway through the year (we can’t believe it either) we are well placed to identify some of the biggest trends in crafting for this year. Looking at the trends that have taken off since January, and those which are getting more and more popular as the year goes on, we’ve singled out the five crafts which are taking 2023 by storm.

Cross Stitch

Cross Stitch has been a much-loved hobby for centuries, and this year it’s making a resurgence. Cross stitch is calming, therapeutic and meditative, whilst also allowing you to make beautiful creations. We stock two particularly popular ranges - stitchlets and textile heritage.

With a cross stitch kit, you will have everything you need to get crafting, excluding scissors. All our kits are small and portable, and can be taken anywhere for you to craft on the go! Stitchlets are small, so are perfect for beginners making their way into this hobby, allowing you to finish wonderful designs in no time at all.

Needle felting

Needle felting is wonderfully simple but a very effective way of creating either 2D pictures of 3D art. You simply repeatedly poke through the wool with a needle until you achieve your desired design. It’s quite literally like painting or sculpting with wool instead of paint or clay, and it’s a lot of fun!

To do some needle felting all you need is some wool, a needle, and something to work on, so there’s no mess and no fuss. No wonder it’s so popular this year! Needle felting has become increasingly on trend recently as it’s been all over social media, mostly as a way of making cute little cuddly creatures!

You can have a go with one of our needle felting kits to help you get creative whilst crafting something unique and lovely of your very own. We also offer needle felting workshops, in which you can learn both 2D felting (including fantastic landscapes and seascapes) and 3D felting; our Christmas projects are especially popular!

Crochet

Crochet has been a big crafting trend for a long time, but in 2023 it has gained more popularity than ever before, for lots of different reasons. One big reason behind the crochet trend is how accessible it is as a hobby. All you need to crochet is a crochet hook and some wool. It’s also completely portable so you can crochet on the move as well as at home. It’s also an extremely versatile craft, as once you’ve learned the basics there’s no limit to the thing you can create. From decorations to full outfits, once you know how to crochet you can make pretty much anything you can dream up.

Crochet is also a very sociable craft, and we have regular crochet, knitting and crafting club meetings for people to get together and share ideas, compare work and get help on tricky stitches.

Once you learn how to crochet you’ve got a skill, and a passion, for life! We offer a crochet for beginners class for anyone keen to get started with crochet.

Crystal art

Crystal art, sometimes known as diamond art, diamond painting or sequin art, has gained a huge amount of popularity this year, and it’s not hard to see why! Crystal art is a soothing and satisfying way of creating art and crafting something beautiful.

Crystal art is similar to painting by numbers, in that each artwork starts off as a numbered template, to which you then add the corresponding crystals to form a beautiful, shimmering piece of art. Simply pick up the crystal with a special pen and place it on the right-numbered spot. There’s no need for glue or mess as they affix instantly and cleanly.

At Coastal Craft Collective we have a range of crystal art kits to choose from to start you off on your new hobby!

Macrame

Macrame has been around for hundreds of years, but social media has taken the world of macrame by storm and made it one of the biggest crafting trends of the year. Macrame is essentially the art of tying knots to turn some simple cord into something beautiful. Macrame can be used to make practical things such as hangers for plant pots, bags, baskets, and coasters, as well as purely decorative wall hangings. You can even join us and craft your own at our macrame plant hanger workshop!
